Extra verses courtesy Nick Dow and Nelly Quinn McDonagh. It's an old Irish Travellers song and there are several versions. "Lining with straw" refers to making one's shoes more comfortable to walk in by padding with straw. Ouch! Nelly's version is also on youtube. Nick Dow's verses were added to the thread for this song on Mudcat. Ould Cooney, young Colley and ould Martin Quinn, Well they made up together to smuggle the tin, Refrain (after each verse): With me right toorin-arinan, right toorin-arinan, Right toorin-anay. Well they walked all the day boys till the heels they grew raw, Well they hadn't the comfort of lining with straw. Says Colley to Cooney "If you take my advice" "Don't take that ould mare 'cuz she's not very nice." "I'll take her," says Cooney, "I like her ould tricks" When he starts to yoke her, then she starts to kick Oh pity old Cooney, pity him then, To see his poor nose hanging down to his chin! [that's after the mare kicked him] "I'll yoke her", says Colley "I'm wise to her tricks." But the more that he yoked her, the more the mare kicks. "The hills they are high boys, th'oul' mare she is thin, And my heart lies a-trembling for fear she'll give in." "I once had a piebald all covered in dots, And it's many's the fiver she's won in the trots." Up came th'oul' sergeant with a laugh and a grin, "I'll have ye inside boys for the smuggling of tin." Ould Cooley stood up boys to make the excuse, "If you leave us all go sir, it's home we will scoot." But said th'oul' sergeant with a laugh and a smile, "I'll have ye inside boys for smuggling a while." Up jumps young Colley and took a wild swing, And clipped the old sergeant right under the chin! We crossed back the border, we blessed the ould faith, "To hell with the black North, we're in the Free-State."
As Good as Good Gets on an Unusually Good Day, during an Exceptional Month, in a Year to Remember!!!
When I was a kid I had a CD called the best of Irish something or other. I lost the CD many years ago, and now I'm on a quest to find as many of the songs from it as I can on youtube. I loved every song on that CD and had them all memorized. No other version of any of those songs can quite compare, in my mind. Anyway, this is one of them, and I'm so glad to hear it again after so long searching. Thanks for uploading!
This song resonates with my soul ☘🍻
Classic Irish ☘️ Vibes!! My favorite of all time ❤❤❤❤❤❤ May the Lord Above provide & ye never go without, great health & prosperity to all!! ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️🍻🍻🍻

Love the counterpoint of the pipes on this, other-wordly sound……
he is an Irish traveler..
Some of the best singing ever put on tape. Pure freedom.
Yes, except it isn't freedom, but submission. But some of the very best indeed!
That Bodhran drum Beats like my heart Steady stout and true And Always on time
Love it

Sublime...
The real deal, R.I.P. Liam
Just beautiful.
Check out Liam Clancy's version of this song IN GAELIC....recorded 3 times: in the '60's; in the 70's-80's (with Tommy Makem); and in 2008 at his last live concert at New York City's "Bitter End".
Makes the hairs on my neck stand tall...
This is beyond music. This is magic. With the pipes of Seamaus Ennis in the background.
id say its fionnbarr on the pipes as he is an accomplished piper himself
Wrong! Seamus played pipes on this as myself and Finbar were on a three day bender and he couldn't attend!
I met Finbar and George in a pub in Waterford back in 1975, lent them my mandolin to play, (George had broken his guitar string and didn't have a replacement). I jammed a bit with them. I remember George singing a nice version of "Farewell He". They were characters with a capital "C" :)
Imagine the ireland we could have if we had Connolly still ... a working mans republic.
Great Irish traveller men the fureys
The anthem of every shadower. For those not who are not aware the Curragh Camp has a huge water tower visible across the county. Everyone has always grown up in the shadow of the tower.
Amazing. Glad I found this.
Wonderful version.
This is probably the best version of O Holy Night ever to be sang...EVER.....and it only has 4.5k views in 10 years!!! ..... while soulja boy has 400 million!!

Far better vocal & guitar playing than the original!
What a clueless twat
Get a grip 😄
JDB improves everything.
The definitive version of this great ballad. R.i.p James Connolly, patriot and socialist.
Not much into socialist totalitarianism but this is such a beautiful song reminiscent of sea shanties.
The voice combined with the bagpipe is haunting and beautiful.
Philip this isn't the bagpipes, this is the sound of the uilleann pipes.
@@thomasoflaherty3520 😉
This song sends me cold.......I must have sung it in a previous life. The pipes are so haunting and the vocals are superb.
